Poor Herbie. ?I know those vets (although I do not live there - I know of them through the House Rabbit Society and I have met them). I am shocked that Dr. Saver won't treat your little guinea pig. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone better in that area. They were always my first referral. You can go to http://www.rabbit.org and on the right, click on? the 'VETS' icon. Usually in that case, the vet will refer you to a surgical specialist or other vet. The placement of the stones can also determine whether surgery is feasible: stones in the ureters (tubes leading from kidneys to bladder) are a very poor surgical risk, as are stones in the kidneys. Stones in the urethra (tube leading from bladder to "outside" can sometimes be flushed or gently removed under local anesthesia. How old is Herbie? Dart had recurring problems during November and December especially?with sharp pain and bleeding when she pee'ed, if memory serves me correctly. She was treated with baytril initially, but the urinary tract infection came right back about two weeks after completing her course of treatment. Then another vet in the practice suggested another antiobiotic--some of you may remember the antiobiotic that is used for horses, but he would stir it up in a dose small enough for a piggy. She did well for a time after trying this antiobiotic, but then the infection/pain/bleeding recurred. We tried baytril again, but I had to take her off immediately because she got WORSE, and I thought I might lose her. I believe it may have been the baytril that caused such a sharp turn for the worse. Anyways, the same dr. who had initially prescribed the horse med put her back on it, and as soon as we completed the two week course, I started using?100% cranberry juice mixed with some water daily--maybe about 2/3 juice to 1/3 water--I don't think it really matters much. Dart lives with her sister, and they both love their cranberry, but I would say they drink 1-1 1/2 oz of juice daily on average. The great news is: since beginning the use of the juice, she has never had a severe recurrence and has never bled. Occasionally I will hear a tiny cry when she pees, but she's tremendously improved. So I plan on continuing using cranberry juice for the remainder of their lives. It CAN be expensive, but I don't care--as long as it helps.?Knudsen's costs?$9 or so for a 48 oz bottle. Other name brands are not so expensive--all seem to work quite well, although the Knudsen's does seem more rich, so I buy it some of the time, despite the atronomical price. Nice to hear from you both! I sincerely hope that this info is a help to other piggies. Sometimes I think it's hit-or-miss as we attempt to treat our piggies and nurse them back to health--what works for one may not work for another. But because this long period of freedom from pain-while-peeing (and sometimes blood) has been VERY encouraging to me, again I would like to recommend the antiobiotic tucoprim and 100% cranberry juice as a maintenance/preventative. Certainly worth a try for any piggies who suffer from uti's/cystitis. ? Ann Dart, Feather, Gizmo & Tessie ? ?P.S. Hello to Amy--I saw your post earlier last week. I'm Gidgy's "mom" (all my piggies are/were from Cindy Kuester's rescue--do you remember me? How are your piggies doing? ? ? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Four years ago when our guinea pig Teddy Bear had a stone, the choice was to operate or let the stone eventually kill him. We operated on Teddy Bear, which he pulled through with flying colors. The vet also gave a discount rate because we could not afford the first quote. I call other vets to price the surgery. I might add even though Teddy Bear survived there were other problems that were not detected until a couple of months after surgery. Teddy Bear did live another year and a half. He died at age 4. We now have two guinea pigs for the past 2 years that came from the animal shelter and are already 5 years old. The best thing I can suggest is if you can afford it get the surgery and if not, don't let your guinea suffer have the vet look at Herbie, let them suggest what would be best for your guinea pig. I hope I was some help to you and I wish you and Herbie the best. > From: stones-request at gpigs-database.org > Subject: Stones Digest, Vol 48, Issue 7 > To: stones at gpigs-database.org > Date: Wed, 27 May 2009 12:00:03 -0400 > > Send Stones mailing list submissions to > stones at gpigs-database.org > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > http://gpigs-database.org/mailman/listinfo/stones_gpigs-database.org > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > stones-request at gpigs-database.org > > You can reach the person managing the list at > stones-owner at gpigs-database.org > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of Stones digest..." > > > Guinea Pig Bladderstone Mailing List > > Today's Topics: > > 1. health: URGENT herbie (svetooshka at aol.com) > > > ---------------------------------------------------------------------- > > Message: 1 > Date: Wed, 27 May 2009 10:38:56 -0400 > From: svetooshka at aol.com > Subject: [Stones] health: URGENT herbie > To: Svetooshka at aol.com > Message-ID: <8CBACEFFFF69DD5-B64-290A at webmail-dd21.sysops.aol.com> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" > > peace, all!? we hope this finds all very healthy and well! > > im freaking out.... herbie isnt able to defecate.? everytime she is trying (hoppin in the process), it seems it is not coming out.? > she isnt moving around much at all today.? we are giving her veggies in front of her since she is not running to get them as usual. > > she is eating... should i still start to administer the critical care??? what amounts are good for bladderstone piggies... > > do bladderstones block the anus as well? > > thank you all for your prayers! > > poopsies & shweta > > > -------------- next part -------------- > An HTML attachment was scrubbed... > URL: > > ------------------------------ > > _______________________________________________ > Stones mailing list > Stones at gpigs-database.org > http://gpigs-database.org/mailman/listinfo/stones_gpigs-database.org > > > End of Stones Digest, Vol 48, Issue 7 > ************************************* _________________________________________________________________ Windows Live?: Keep your life in sync. http://windowslive.com/explore?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_BR_life_in_synch_052009 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... If Herbie does make it through the surgery, you and the vet can monitor her?recover afterwards to see how she does. Notwithstanding Herbie's age, if?her physical condition has deteriorated so much that she can not tolerate the surgery, the vet can make that assessment as well and the kindest thing for Herbie is to put her to sleep. I am so sorry. One in her bladder, the other lodged in her urethra.? the vet team were having a very very difficult time taking it out of the urethra - it just wasnt moving.? at some point, they were going to call and ask what i wanted to do....but they used their willpower and came up with a new technique to dislogdge it!? so so beautiful!? i dont know all the details (will get them soon) but it involved catheterization which pulled the stone back into the bladder. the team created and learned a new technique that I hope will be very very helpful to so many other piggies!
